The Secret is Out - Costalegre is it
From Puerto Vallarta to La Manzanilla, Costalegre (Happy Coast) has some of Mexico’s best-kept secrets.
The ecological tourist corridor allows for secluded getaways and cultural experiences with an environmentally conscious focus, adding to the allure of visiting.
From charming towns and pristine beaches to dense jungles, nature reserves, and exclusive luxury resorts, you’ll have plenty of options on a Mexico vacation to this spectacular stretch of the country.
Puerto Vallarta
The biggest beach city and largest metropolitan area on the happy coast, Puerto Vallarta offers a dizzying blend of culture, cuisine, tradition, and luxury—all with a beach twist.
Los Muertos will have the liveliest scene, while Conchas Chinas offers a more secluded escape. If you can access a boat, check out the remote village of Yelapa and enjoy its azure waters and golden beach.
Besides enjoying sunny days on the sand, you can also zip-line in the Sierra Madre, scuba dive at Los Arcos, and whale watch from December through March.
Don’t miss the epic sunsets at El Faro Lighthouse Bar, and remember to try aguachile (Mexican ceviche) and birria (local beef stew) at a traditional seafood restaurant.

Barra de Navidad
This smaller, laid-back town has a community feel with a thriving expat population. Head to Barra de Navidad for authentic Mexican food and culture, fishing, surfing, and to get away from the hum of tourist traffic.
The livelier main beach is named after the town, while Boca de Iguanas is less crowded and has some great surf, especially for kids and beginners. For more action, you can also do deep-sea fishing for sailfish and marlin or kayak in mangroves.
Eat traditional fish tacos under a beachside canopy, and remember to bring plenty of cash—there is no working ATM in town!

Careyes
Conservation efforts are in full swing in Careyes, perfect for luxury travelers, nature lovers, artists, and those who want to get off the well-trodden path.
You’ll see the release of turtle hatchlings in July and January. Still, there are things to do in the exclusive coastal enclave year-round, including kayaking, fishing, diving, snorkeling, and windsurfing.
For the best panoramic pictures, hike up to Copalita Cliff and enjoy epic sunset views over the Pacific. We recommend making dinner reservations at the Playa Rosa Beach Club for fresh seafood and the best cocktails.
The lack of large hotels is ideal for those who like to stay under the radar, and limited cell and WiFi service add to the experience, providing a genuine sense of retreat from the outside world.

La Manzanilla
Another of the Happy Coast’s hidden gems, La Manzanilla, caters to digital nomads and travelers who want an equal dose of relaxation and adventure.
You can hike in jungle trails, paddleboard, and snorkel, or relax on the long beach with soft sand and calm waters, perfect for kayaking and swimming.
Manzanilla is also home to a massive mangrove estuary, where you can spot iguanas, crocodiles, exotic birds, and more! Finally, don’t miss the artisan and organic farmer’s market on Fridays, and bring plenty of cash, as most places won’t accept credit cards.
