Travel Trends: The Hush Trip

Pros and Cons of Taking a Secret Getaway

It’s better to ask for forgiveness than permission.  That old chestnut has given birth to the newest travel trend: the hush trip.

‘Hush’ as in: shhhhhh, it’s a secret.

In truth, hush trips aren’t new, and people have been hush-tripping for years.

Now, it finally has a name.

So what’s a ‘hush’ trip?

A hush trip is when someone travels for a few days and works remotely without their colleagues or employers knowing.

As the name suggests, a hush trip is a secret and taken on the DL for those whose jobs afford the flexibility of remote or semi-remote work.

The pandemic normalized people not coming into the office and dialing into video conferences from anywhere. So who’s to say this week, it can’t be from a quiet cafe in Europe after you’ve found some amazing last minute travel deals?

Why go on a hush trip?

Besides being able to say ‘both’ when the airport official asks if you’re traveling for business or pleasure, there are surprising benefits to taking a hush trip:

Recharge and revitalize

Hush trips tend to be short and spontaneous, which means they’re also likely to be taken solo. With everyday life ceaselessly hectic and full, finding time to be alone to recharge is vital to mental health and well-being.

Boost productivity

It may sound like an excuse to get out of work, but studies show that remote work boosts productivity. People don’t go on hush trips to slack off; they go to work! Add in the solitude and a cool space to call your temporary office, and it’s no wonder why getting away can make you more productive.

Attend an unmissable event

There are some events you can’t miss. It could be a graduation, wedding, or long-standing family tradition.

Your favorite band is in Manhattan for a night, or your niece is debuting on Broadway. Whatever the case, a last minute hotel deal can help make your hush trip an affordable reality.

Is it risky to go on a hush trip?

You can avoid most problems with planning, but taking a trip in the middle of a work week without letting anyone know isn’t without risk.

Lack of Internet connectivity

While this won’t be an issue at a luxury hotel or all-inclusive resort, remote, exotic, and adventure destinations may not always have a reliable internet connection for you to carry on working.

Getting stuck somewhere

It’s impossible to predict the future, which always makes getting stuck overseas a possible risk. An unforeseen accident or weather emergency could delay your return and expose your hush trip.

Jeopardizing your job

While most employers are unlikely to issue anything more than a warning, some companies have strict, no-tolerance policies regarding unapproved remote work.

Revising company policy, speaking to HR, and investing in a VPN service to block your computer's location are ways to protect yourself from unnecessary risks when taking advantage of last-minute vacation deals.
